COWLEY, John Duncan (1897-1944) Middle Temple 1922; 1CL Lancashire 1925; CL UCL School 1934-1944
He built an efficient and effective framework on which the new LANCASHIRE service could develop. He then broadened and extended the UCL curriculum and did much to end the antagonism between the LA and the pioneer SCHOOL which it had been instrumental in founding. He published The use of reference material (1937) and Bibliographical description and cataloguing (1939) and was responsible for the chapter on Austria and Central Europe in the LA's 1938 Survey of libraries. He was London U's Librarian Designate in 1944.
